A couple of students once egged the home of Naomi Snyder, the girls’ dean at Parma Senior High School. They also topped her gas tank with sugar.
They ended up becoming successful adults and sending her Christmas cards.
Snyder, an award-winning educator and leader, died June 9 at home in Apopka, Fla. She was 91.
She was raised as Naomi Mae Miller in Wooster, O., and Rockwood, Pa. She earned degrees at Wittenberg University and Kent State University.
Snyder taught briefly at Parma Schaaf High School, Norton High and Penn High in Greenville, Pa. In 1954, she began teaching biology at Parma Senior High.
From 1962 to 1964, she counseled at the district’s Greenbriar Junior High. Then came 17 as the senior high’s dean of girls and many doubling as a counselor, particularly for vocational and disabled students.
Among several honors, she was named counselor of the year in 1979 at the All Ohio Guidance Conference. Among many volunteer roles, she was president of Ohio School Counselors Association, Ohio Women’s Equity Action League, Gloria Dei Lutheran Church Council, Pilot Club of Cleveland and the Ohio Association of Women Deans, Administrators and Counselors.
Snyder retired in 1981, moved to Apopka in 1989 and became president of a few organizations there.
She outlived her husband, Victor Snyder. Survivors include two children, six grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren. Her funeral was in Florida. </body> A couple of students once egged the home of Naomi Snyder, the girls’ dean at Parma Senior High School. They also topped her gas tank with sugar.
